This article lists the political parties in Sulatia.

History

Following the First Republican revolution in 1800, the aristocracy and monarchy that had dominated Sulatian politics ceased to be and was replaced by various republican and populist factions. The conclusion of the Great Upheaval saw the gradual democratization of the nascent republican government as the threat of war with Tyrnica, Blayk, and other monarchist states declined. This saw the rise of a robust multi-party system in the decades after. As republican fervor declined, the numerous parties and factions coalesced into five main political parties: Democratic Republican Party, Patriotic Society of 1800, Radical Left, Equalists, and Raivostunut. None of these parties secured a majority in the Eduskunta outright, and instead coalition governments became the norm from the 1840s onwards. The 1857 constitutional crisis saw the beginning of the modern Sulatian political system and the dissolution or merger of several major parties. The 1860 election firmly established the Patriotic Society and Democratic Republican Party as the nation's two major political parties.

The election of the broadly left-wing political League of Workers and Farmers in 1915 dramatically changed the political landscape. The adoption of the 1916 constitution saw it become the nation's sole legal political party in order to ensure the necessary economic and social reforms would pass and survive. The parties making up the League of Workers and Farmers were dissolved themselves and the League was instead reformed into a political party in its own right. This remained the political norm until 1987, when acting-President Perttunen Klaus instituted sweeping democratic reforms following the Labor Day Crisis.

The adoption of the 1987 constitution re-established political parties under the caveat that they do not advocate for the overthrow of the current system of government. The League of Workers and Peasants was dissolved as a party and reverted to its original purpose of being a left-wing political bloc. The internal factions of the League quickly established themselves as functional parties by the time of the 1992 election. Since the formation of political parties, there are seven major political parties: Republic, Red Flag Party, Popular Vanguard, Republican Socialist Party, Progressive Movement, Green Party, and the New Left. The current government is a coalition of Republic, Popular Vanguard, and New Left.
