The Nero Semeriakon is a mountain range in the Isles of Velar. Its name is recorded in the earliest written sources and means "the spine of Semeria," because it runs for more than 230 kilometres (140 mi) northeast-southwest along the island of Semeria. The tallest mountain in the range, Mai-esu Fanonú, is the high point of the Isles of Velar, with a maximum elevation of 2,216 metres (7,270 ft).
Cultural importance
For millennia, the Nero Semeriakon was a major barrier to east-west trade and traffic on Semeria and led to the formation of distinct cultural and political identities on either side. Its high and remote passes and valleys provided places of refuge for hermits, bandits and cults. A summit in the northeast of the range, Mai Visilaz, was considered sacred to the Velaran god of the sky, Visil, and a minor city-state built in the mountain's shadow came to be the host of his cult and the Mayuan Oracle, by far the most significant oracular cult in the Sea of Velar.
