The Parliament of Arthurista is the bicameral national legislature of the Commonwealth of Arthurista. It alone possesses legislative supremacy and thereby ultimate power over all other political bodies in the Commonwealth and its territories. It currently has 1425 members, of whom 650 are elected directly by citizens who are registered voters in the House of Commons (the lower house). The House of Lords (the upper house) is appointed by social institutional recommendation, and served fixed, limited terms. By constitutional convention, all government ministers, including the Prime Minister, are members of the House of Commons, and thus are accountable to the respective branches of the legislature.
In theory, the Commonwealth's supreme legislative power is vested in the Shield-in-Parliament. However, as the Shield acts on the advice of the Prime Minister and the powers of the House of Lords are limited and nominal, de facto power is vested in the House of Commons.
Legislation may be introduced in the House of Commons by an individual MP or groups of MPs. Per its parliamentary model, it elects the Prime Minister from its largest or governing party after each election. The Parliament must have an election every five years, and leaders cannot call a new election between the fixed terms.
The Arthuristan parliament is widely-noted for its civil, consensus-style political atmosphere.
