Politics of Ossoria

Jump to navigation Jump to search

The High Kingdom of Ossoria is a federal state that is governed within the framework of an executive monarchy in which the monarch, currently High Queen Tara Ní Sionán, is the head of state while the Taoiseach of Ossoria, currently Innis Ní Gearailt, is the head of government. Executive power is exercised by the Monarch. Legislative power is vested in the tricameral Ossorian Parliament. The judicial system is independent of the executive and the legislature. The highest court is the High Bench of the Realm.

The Ossorian political system is a multi-party system, with the two dominant parties being the Crown Nationalist Party and the Social Progressive Party. Due to the mixed-member proportional electoral system used in parliamentary elections, majorities are rare, making coalitions with third-parties necessary to deliver working majorities in parliament, with the CNP and SPP typically working with the Centrist Party to form a government.

The constitution of the High Kingdom is uncodified, being made up of custom, precedent, treaties, royal decrees, constitutional conventions, statutes and other elements such as international law.

High Kingdom vs Sceptre

The High Kingdom of Ossoria (Ard-Ríocht na Osraí) is the most well-known and commonly used name for the entirety of the Ossorian state, however within the Ossorian government, this term is legally defined as including only the nine Kingdoms of Ossoria plus the 'Inner Provinces' (Cúigí Istigh): the Principality of Carmane, the Holy City of Armacht, and the Éirne Castellany, though the inclusion of the latter is still a matter of debate even to this day.

The Sceptre of Ossoria (Ríshlat na Osraí) is the Ossorian governmental term which legally describes all of the territory under the sovereignty of Ossoria, including the High Kingdom and the 'Outer Provinces' (Cúigí Seachtracha): the Alyksberg Free State, the Archduchy of Arzell, the Hemar Confederacy, and the Lordship of Vormsi.

The Federal Government

The Monarchy

The Monarchy of Ossoria (Monarcacht Osraí) is the executive monarchy of the High Kingdom of Ossoria.

The Privy Council

The Privy Council (Comhairle Ionpháirteach) is a branch of the Monarchy and serves as the advisory body to the Monarch, composed of the heads of the government ministries, the top officers of the military, and other advisers.

The Parliament

The Parliament of Ossoria (Dáil Osraí) is comprised of three chambers, the lower two of which represent the two primary classes of the population: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The third chamber, the House of Keys, is the upper chamber and represents the interests of the Constituent States of the Realm.

The Judiciary

Constituent States

The High Kingdom is a federal monarchy comprised of nine Kingdoms and seven Dominions, Kingdom-equivalent territories typically found outside the Home Islands. The nine Kingdoms are the Kingdoms of Kenlis, Arless, Vadre, Fira, Brecon, Erdian, Roshin, Ederne, and Tarvi. The seven Dominions are the Alyksberg Free State, the Archduchy of Arzell, the City of Carria, the Hemar Confederacy, the Principality of Inis, the Vaddon Castellany, and the Lordship of Vormsi.

Aristocracy

Political spectrum

In contrast to the typical left-center-right spectrum, Ossorian political culture primarily revolves around the royalist-vs-legislaturist spectrum, a division dating back to the Legislaturist War in the 1860s. The Crown Nationalist Party serves as the leader of the Royalist Faction and the Social Progressive Party serves as its opposite in the Legislaturist Faction, with all other parties falling somewhere on the spectrum. This axis dictates which parties are more likely to cooperate more than any other policy concern in Ossorian political culture.
