Scovernois men's football league system
The Scovernois men's football league system is a series of associated professional men's football leagues that constitute the professional football pyramid in Scovern. As of 2023 there are 90 professional men's football clubs across five leagues, as well as hundreds more non-league clubs in various regions across the country.
History of the league system
Football in Scovern was first played in the 1880s, where the oldest clubs originate. Football developed almost entirely recreationally until the 1910s, when the first leagues began to emerge. Many teams can trace their names back to the groups of people who founded them (i.e. Midvit; Midhamar Vitteritter ("Midhamar Witterites"), Sivborg HAF; Sivborg Havnearbejderforbund ("Sivborg Dockworkers' Union")) around this time. It wasn't until the end of the Great War that the league system began to be centralised and finalised. Two professional divisions, the Førstenliga and Andenliga, were created in 1937, and the Tredjenliga, Fjerdenliga and Femtenliga were added as semi-professional leagues in the 1950s. As football in the country grew substantially in the 1970s and 1980s, coupled with the growing globalisation and commodification of football, these three leagues were made fully professional in 1984, more than doubling the size of the league system. The leagues remain this way into the modern day.
