The Skarmian Defence Services (Skarmic: Ieskarmiket Sluzbai Ichur, IPA: [ ]; Beleroskovi: Sluzhby Oborony Skarmii, IPA: [ ]) are the unified military forces of the Federation of Skarmia. The Skarmian Defence Services consist of the Skarmian Army, the Skarmian Navy, the Skarmian Air Force, the Highlander Guards and Skarmian Military Intelligence. The national defence policy aims to guarantee the preservation of the independence and sovereignty of the state, the integrity of its land area, territorial waters, airspace and its constitutional order.

History

During the long period when Skarmia was under Beleroskovi control (as the Southwestern Krai), military defence of the region was twofold - the Imperial military defended its borders, but many of the Skarmic tribes regularly collaborated with Beleroskovi military interests, operating semi-independently as vassals of the Empire. Numerous Skarmic polki pledged their own loyalty to the Empire directly, and for many years, this policy of Skarmic tribesmen independently fighting alongside Imperial forces, often with written contracts promising generous pay for their mercenary work, was codified in law, forming a great deal of the basis for the current iteration of the Skarmic tribal hierarchy. However, in 1867, as it became more apparent that hiring Skarmic mercenaries was an inferior policy to holding a standing army, the Empire formed the Highlander Guard, comprised mainly of ethnic Skarmic people, and with many of the polki that had subjected themselves willingly to the Empire.

When socialist revolution hit Beleroskov and Skarmia became nominally independent as the Zalsoker Autonomy, the Highlander Guard stepped in to keep the peace while local Skarmic nobility took over the reigns of government in the region. This state of affairs did not last long, however, and the Red March of Peace, led by Renalás-Ghá, marched on the city of Zalsoker. A fearful nobility ordered the Highlanders not to engage with the protestors, and the Highlander Guard found its place in the reorganised People's Defence Army of Skarmia, which itself later joined the military apparatus of the United Communist and Socialist States.

The People's Defence Army participated in the World War alongside Beleroskovi forces, as well as participating in the Ossotia War against neighbouring Ossotia. In the subsequent Siege of Skarmia, where Skarmia, now cut off from the land border with the rest of the UCSS, suffered greatly economically, the People's Defence Army gradually came into disrepair. On 17 March 1999, Skarmia declared independence from the UCSS alongside other neighbouring countries, and the modern day Federation of Skarmia was formed. On 30 April, the People's Defence Army symbolically laid down their arms for a minute, before raising them again in loyalty to the Federation, now reorganised as the Skarmian Defence Services. Since 2007, the Chief of Defense Services has been selected by the Government of Skarmia through the Ministry of Defence.
