Sovar (Sovarese: Sjóvar), officially the Republic of Sovar (Tjóðveldi Sjóvar), informally referred to as the Sovar Islands, is an archipelagic country in Western Auressia in North Hesperian Ocean. The country's capital and largest city is Sulastad which is home to 42% of the country's total population. The islands have a total population of 347,382 as of 2018 and an area of 7,551 km2 (2,915 sq mi) and a population density of 46/km2 (119.1/sq mi).

According to surviving records from the 9th century, Sovar was settled in in the late 5th Century by the vikings from TBD. Sovar remained independent as a loosely bonded confederation until it was annexed by Rythene in 1552. Under Rythenean rule the Sovarese language was repressed and all official business was conducted in Rythenean. At the outbreak of the Rythenean Revolution in 1790, Sovarese officials and various locals took control of the region's administrative building in Lagurstad and declared their support for the Rebellion. Despite small skirmishes by Monarchist supporters the islands would remain relatively peaceful compared to Rythene.

Sovar became a self-governing part of Rythene in 1952, the following year a Rythenean nuclear weapons accident occurred in the far-north of the country. In 1970 Sovar voted narrowly to become a separate state from Rythene and the Aðalfundur issued a declaration of independence in 1972, thus ending the 420 year long Rythenean occupation of the islands. The country's economy remained largely tied to fishing and agriculture, both of which became increasing industrialised industries throughout the 1980s. In 2011 the country gained observer status within the Commonwealth of Northern Auressia.

Sovar is a developed country with a high standard of living and a market economy, it is ranked highly in global indexes for economic freedom, healthcare, education and freedom of expression. The country also has a history of being a liberal society with progressive views on LGBT rights, abortion and other social issues, the country has a strong history of being a multi-party democracy. It is a member of the !UN and an observer of the Commonwealth of Northern Auressia.

Sovar is a parliamentary republic with an elected legislature, the Aðalfundur (General Assembly) which is the successor to the Tjóðsambinding (National Assembly) which was established as an autonomous parliament for Sovar in 1952 by the Rythenean national parliament. The General Assembly has 86 seats which are elected using proportional representation with a threshold of 5% for a party to win seats in the General Assembly.

The head of state - President - is a largely ceremonial role and is elected by the General Assembly every 6 years with a maximum of one term allowed. Despite being a largely ceremonial role the President has the ability to veto laws passed by the General Assembly. A vetoed law will immediately be put to a national referendum no less than 7 months after the veto. This has only occurred twice, once in 1973 and once in 2002, the latter triggering the resignation of Set Hensarson as Prime Minister.

The head of government is the Prime Minister, who leads the Cabinet which is the country's executive. The cabinet is chosen by the General Assembly who must approve each new cabinet. The General Assembly can reject the formation of cabinets (Such as in 1972, 1985, 2005, 2014) in which case a new cabinet must be formed with the consent of the Assembly. If the Assembly cannot agree on a cabinet after 3 votes the President will appoint a cabinet. This has only happened once (2014) and negotiations between the President and the incumbent Progressive-Socialist coalition lasted 10 weeks to appoint a cabinet. The Prime Minister is a directly elected position. If a Prime Minister leaves office during their term, elections must be held within 60 days. The first Deputy President of the General Assembly will take over the role of Prime Minister during this period if the previous Prime Minister is incapacitated or otherwise unable to fulfil their role as Prime Minister until new elections can be held.

Since it's independence, Sovar has only had one female Prime Minister, Var Jogvansdóttir who was Prime Minister between 2002 and 2017. There have been no female Presidents of Sovar. 25.58% of members of the General Assembly are female since 2017, the highest proportion in Sovarese history. In 2018 an all female party was formed in Sovar to encourage more women to run for political office and achieve gender equality in the country.
