The Democrat (French: L'Démocrate) is a Gylian newspaper, founded in 1980.

History

It was founded in 1980, during the wretched decade. In response to the crises affecting Gylias, it rejected the established ideologies of the time, believing them a cause of the wretched decade, and declared its adherence to syncretic politics.

It reached a degree of influence in the 1990s–2000s, when its stance was largely in tune with that of the New Alliance for the Future and the broader Mathilde Vieira government.

The 1990s also saw it adopt new technology such as digital printing, establish its website, and digitise its archives through BiblioNet.

Profile

Its political orientation is syncretic, and it is sometimes considered centrist as a result. It has been parodied at times for its "woolly", New Age approach to politics. It supports deliberative democracy, decentralisation, and degrowth.

It publishes editions in English, French, and Gylic, with the latter edition using the various Gylic languages based on the native language of the respective writer or region referred to in the story.

Ownership and organisation

The Democrat is owned and published by Democoop, legally constituted as an SC. Its headquarters are in Peisir, Arsad.

The newspaper has a 5-member Management Board and a 10-member Supervisory Board, elected yearly.

Its revenue comes from newsagent's sales, paid subscriptions, online orders, and donations. Donors are listed at the end of each issue. It does not accept advertising.
