The 3rd Military Police Garrison, commonly known as the Third Section, is a garrison of the Imperial Beringian Military Police that functions as one of the state security services of the Imperial Government of Old Beringia. The Third Section is headquartered in Magnolia City in the Minor Islands and operates throughout Beringia, and foreign countries in a limited capacity. To qualify for the Third Section, one must be a member of the State Fascist Party and have served for at least two years in the Military Police or another branch. It mainly draws talent from Imperial Army Intelligence and other garrisons of the Imperial Military Police. Despite being part of the Military Police it has no law enforcement function and instead functions as an intelligence and security apparatus.

History

Lineage

Insignia

A court with five pillars sits below the winged goddess Nemesis who carries a sword and hourglass on a purple field. The motto, "Only the wicked fear the truth", sits below the insignia written in gold on a black field. The five pillars represent the five pillars of the justice system in Beringia: Policing, Prosecution, Courts, Correctional, Community. The unit insignia was created on October 10, 2002 as part of the Department of War's effort to give insignia to newly created units without a clear lineage to units in the former United Provinces Armed Forces. It was approved October 12, 2002 with minor changes, being the color and and motto which was changed from "The truth is my light" to "Only the wicked fear the truth".

Structure

The Third Section has several internal units:

  • Administrative Cohort: Responsible for coordinating the efforts of the Third Section, maintaining records, analysis, and keeping a register of the Third Sections informants.
  • Communications Cohort: Responsible for the surveillance of mail, telephone, and internet communications.
  • Special Investigation Cohort: Investigates domestic groups, persons, and ideologies deemed to be a threat to public order.
  • Counter Cohort: Responsible for protection against sabotage, espionage, and propaganda.
  • Unconventional Warfare Cohort: A commando styled armed force under complete control of the Third Section. Specially trained for exfiltration of compromised assets.
  • Psychological Applications Cohort: Responsible for promoting the effectiveness of Imperial forces by inducing or reinforcing behavior favorable to Beringian objectives.
  • Intelligence Support Cohort
    • Interior Service Unit: Responsible for gathering and acting on intelligence domestically.
    • Foreign Service Unit: Responsible for gathering and acting on intelligence in foreign countries and operating in conjunction with other garrisons during invasions.
  • Prison Administration Cohort: Maintains and operates prison camps containing political prisoners.

Operations

Personnel and recruitment

Adrestia Castle as seen from below

Officially the Third Section employs 5,000 civilian and 20,000 military personnel but it is an open secret that the actual number is as much as 100,000. The Third Section does not accept direct applicants like the other garrisons of the Imperial Military Police. Third Section operatives are recruited from Imperial Army Intelligence, the other garrisons of the Military Police, informers that have consistently yielded actionable information, or directly from the Beringian Youth Training Corps and Young Fascist League if they had a high level of participation. Potential recruits are then subjected to a battery of exams and assessments to judge their capacity to serve and political reliability. After being tapped by recruiters civilian and military candidates are trained at Adrestia Castle, a training facility jointly run by the Department of Intelligence, Investigation, and Insulation and the Third Section outside of Magnolia City. Like the number of personnel in the Third Section, the existence of the training facility at Adrestia Castle is widely known but has never been officially recognized by the Imperial Government.

Informal collaborators, informants, and external sources that provide privileged information are not counted among the ranks of the Third Section though a register of informants is maintained. The network of informants used by the Third Section are drawn from every level of Beringian society and every social group. After invasions officers establish a network of local collaborators to assist in policing and occupation of foreign populations. Third Section information officers must conduct moral appraisals and character assessments of their informants as part of the process of judging the veracity of the information they gather.
