Tramontia (Rumellan:Tramontìa, officially the Occidental Federation of Tramontia (Rumellan: Federazione Occidentale di Tramontìa) is a country in western Meridia on the planet of Regnum. It is bordered to the north by Guaimaria and to the west by the Immanic Ocean. The Maccacuai mountain range extends through the centre of the country, splitting the country into the arid plains of the west and the tropical rainforest basin of the north-east. The country is a federal parliamentary republic with its capital at Ianua, although its largest city is San Ghjiseppu.

The territory of Tramontia, particularly with respect to the Maccacuai, is considered to be one of the cradles of civilization, and was home to several ancient cultures. The most recent of these before the Guaimarian exchange was the Empire of Inti, which extended through the mountain range up and until Rumellan conquest.

Etymology

The name Tramontia is derived from the Standard Rumellan Terra del tramonto (lit. Land of the sunset) (cf: Tramontio Rumellan: Terra di u tramontu), the name used by royal and colonial charters with respect to the New World as a whole. With the conquest of the Inti Empire, this term was adapted into the derivative Tramontìa with respect to the eponymous Viceroyalty of Tramontia. In due course, as colonization of Meridia and Arcadia continued, the terms "Terra del Tramonto" and "Tramontia" fell out of disuse with respect to the entirety of the two continents and became confined to the colony of the same name. When the viceroyalties of Tramontia and Qullasugiu declared independence, the newly formed federation took the name Tramontia. The former Viceroyalty of Tramontia adopted the name "Republic of Santa Apollonia di u Sole".

History

Prehistory and Pre-Guaimarian Tramontia

In the late 14th Century, the Inti emerged as a powerful state based out of the Maccacuai mountain range. Over the course of approximately a century, the Inti Empire would grow to encompass the majority of pre-Calandrian Tramontia, as well as expanding into other parts of Meridia, becoming the largest empire in the pre-Calandrian New World. Originally a rather small ethnic group based out of the city of Urququcha, the Inti would slowly expand throughout the 13th Century, conquering their neighbours and establishing themselves as one of the pre-eminent powers within the region. However, during the 14th Century, the pace and scale of expansion would rapidly increase, resulting in major conquests and consolidations. By the time of Estarian arrival, the Inti Empire governed between 10 and 15 million people, and was the most powerful polity on the continent. The primary language of the nation was Runa, the native tongue of the Uanca people, the dominant ethnic group in the Empire. However, hundreds of languages and dialects were spoken across the span of the Inti Empire, which itself took its name from the Runa word for the sun, which served as both the symbol of the empire and of its predominant religion.
