History of Etruria |
Prior to the Etrurian Revolution of 1784 and the unification of the country under the Etrurian Republic, the country was fractured into a multitude of states, duchies, principalities, communes and maritime republics. Many of these territories and states emerged out of Etrurian provinces of the Verliquoian Empire, over time they asserted independence peacefully and consolidated themselves to fully-functioning nations. Due to their relative isolation from the rest of Euclea, owing to the Aventine Mountains to the north and east, they became highly interconnected and mutually-dependent. However, this did not deter periods of intense inter-state conflict.
Many of the states maintaining a level of historical continuity far exceeding other Euclean states, maintaining republican traditions from the Solarian Republic (510 BC–57 AD). Their unique forms of government saw a successful marriage of responsive government and early capitalism, producing a highly productive, creative and innovative environment that resulted in the birth of the Vespasian Renaissance. In opposition to the numerous periods of violent conflict, the Etrurian states would regularly rally in alliance against foreign incursion or attempts at external influence being exerted over parts of Etruria.
Pre-revolutionary Etruria would produce several major Euclean powers, especially the Exalted Republic of Povelia, which would go on to colonise and found Nova Poveja in the late 16th century, while establishing an overseas empire across the Solarian Sea basin. However, with the turn of the 18th century, the enlightenment and growing anti-elite radicalism fuelled by devastating conflicts and famines would result in the Etrurian Revolution and the unification of Etruria by 1785.
