The Zitassan Mafia, also known simply as the Mafia is a Zitassan Mafia-terrorist-type organized crime syndicate and criminal society originating in the region of Romani and dating to at least the 18th century. It is a loose association of criminal groups that share a common organizational structure and code of conduct, and present themselves to the public under a common brand. The basic group is known as a "family", "clan", or cosca. Each family claims sovereignty over a territory, usually a town or village or a neighborhood (borgata) of a larger city, in which it operates its rackets. Its members call themselves "men of honor", although the public often refers to them as mafiosi. The Mafia's core activities are protection racketeering, the arbitration of disputes between criminals, and the organizing and oversight of illegal agreements and transactions.

The Mafia exerts it's greatest influence over north Zitasso, though families can be found in the south. The largest and most powerful family in the Zitassan mafia is the De Luca Family, the Padrino (Zitassan for Godfather) of which is often considered the de facto godfather of godfathers in the Zitassan mafia.

History

The history of the Zitassan mafia is shrouded in mystery, as they keep no official records and often tell myths and tall tales to make themselves out to be as fearsome as possible.

Formation

The first mafia families were formed in the late 18th century, often acting as extralegal enforcers for local government officials, with the former Avergnonian governor Charles Renaudin often employing the families to act as his own personal police.

Zitassan Revolution

The Zitassan mafia was split on how to respond to the Zitassan Revolution, with some believing that it would harm them and some believing that being able to act independently of Avergnonian officials would benefit them. In 1823 there was a plot to kill The Quadrumvirate, which ultimately fell through, and the mafia generally laid low during the revolution.

Golden Age

In 1951 Sergio De Luca became the Padrino of the De Luca Family (Formerly the Genovesi family), and by 1960 the De Luca Family had expanded it's influence to eastern Avergnon and to Gasheura. He would be killed in a police raid on his home in 1970, though some believe that the Padrino of the Romano Family, Manuel Romano, paid the police to intentionally kill him, and the Zitassan mafia as a whole would slowly wane in influence, though the De Luca family remained the most powerful family in Zitasso.
