Bahio-Maracans, also known as Black Maracans are Maracans who can trace their ancestry to Bahia. Historically, Bahio-Maracans began to emerge with the import of slaves into the island, and most Bahio-Maracan families were introduced to the island through the slave trade. Bahio-Maracans are the dominant ethnic group within Maracao, making up 66% of the population, as well as having presence in other Arucian countries and Euclea. Bahio-Maracans are renowned for their vibrant culture that has influenced artistic movements around the world.
Origin
Bahio-Maracans are descended from a multitude of Bahian peoples, including veRwizi, isiBanu, Sisulu and Ndjarendi peoples. The most common of these is veRwizi, due to their historic coastal presence. However, many Bahian peoples and tribes have been introduced to Maracao over the years, and its Bahian background is extremely diverse. In 1992, Maracao joined the Congress of Bahian States as an observer state to increase cooperation with Bahian countries.
Demographics
In the 2017 census, Bahio-Maracans made upon 66% of the population, or around 2.3 million people. Much of this population is concentrated in the urban area of Porto Leste, which has a demographic of around 75% Bahio-Maracan. Bahio-Maracans also have a significant overseas presence, throughout the Arucian states and as far as eastern Euclea. Eldmark houses the largest Bahio-Maracan demographic outside of Maracao, with around 84,000, while Swetania and Gaullica share most who reside in Euclea, a combined 77,000 between them. Other states with Bahio-Maracan presence include Imagua and the Assimas and Satucin.
