The Social Times (French: Les Tempes Socielles) is a Gylian newspaper, founded in 1925. It is a major anarchist publication, with a specifically anarcho-communist stance.

History

The Social Times was establised in 1925 in Alscia. It was initially a communist newspaper, broadly supporting the centrist Marxist faction of the PCA. It later moved left, and after Alscia's accession to the Free Territories, became an explicitly anarchist paper.

During the Liberation War, it grew close to the General Council of Workers' Unions and Associations. After the war, it was reorganised as a SA, with the GCWUA buying a significant share.

It was broadly supportive of the Golden Revolution, vocally opposed to the Aén Ďanez government during the wretched decade, and critical of the Decleyre Summit and Social Partnership Program. The 1990s saw it adopt new technology such as digital printing, establish its website, and digitise its archives through BiblioNet.

Profile

Its political orientation is anarchist, with a focus on anarcho-communism. It is thus a mainly left anarchist newspaper, in contrast with Free Gylias' status as a synthesis anarchist forum.

The newspaper has preserved much of its traditional Alscian-era layout, particularly its Art Deco logo (adapted from Walter Crane's "A Garland for May Day") and image-heavy front page. Its coverage and stance is markedly internationalist. Its reporting of the Æsthurlavaj civil war and pro-KSA coverage are credited with making foreign policy a major issue in the 2020 federal election.

It publishes editions in English, French, and Gylic, with the latter edition using the various Gylic languages based on the native language of the respective writer or region referred to in the story. It used to publish an Italian edition, which was closed in 1963.

Ownership and organisation

The Social Times is owned and published by Tempsocielles, legally constituted as an SA. The GCWUA is a major stakeholder in the company. Its headquarters are in Şet, Salxar.

The newspaper has a 5-member Management Board and a 10-member Supervisory Board, elected yearly.

Its revenue comes from newsagent's sales, paid subscriptions, online orders, and donations. Donors are listed at the end of each issue. It does not accept advertising.
