In late 1935, Prime Minister Deusto pressured [[Carlos IV]] to abdicate, and when the king refused Deusto launched a military coup against the monarchy. King Carlos was deposed and exiled to Meronnia on the 1st of October, 1935 and the same day Frederico Deusto declared the Federal Republic of Produzland with himself as President. He also declared himself the President of the Government, a title succeeding the position of Prime Minister. It was agreed between Deusto and the government that the positions of President and President of the Government would separate on Deusto's death.

By the 1970s Deusto was aging and plans around the country for his succession. With Deusto's death in March 1979, Deputy Alberto Seabra Saldanha succeeded him as President of Produzland and as was agreed with Deusto in the 1940s the positions of President and President of the Government diverged and Ronaldo Antunes took the position later that year. Antunes began working with politicians opposed to Deusto to restore democracy in Produzland and devolving the President's power. When after much debate in parliament over the future of Produzland, it was finally decided to restore the monarchy, and the role of Prime Minister replaced the President of the Goverment.
