Euclean Werania (Weranian: Eucläische Ostischland) is a Weranian political party. Founded as a merger between the Social Democratic Radical Party of Werania and the Modern Centre Party the party aims to unite the "progressive and pro-Euclean" political traditions in Werania. It is the current largest opposition party in the Weranian Bundestag. It is noted for its advocacy of pro-Eucleanism and social progressivism whilst having social democratic and liberal factions.
History
Background
Foundation
Ideology
Euclean Werania was formed by the ideological descendants of social democrats, radicals, Sotirian socialists, liberals and liberal conservatives. The dominant strain in the party is supportive of social liberalism and pro-Eucleanism being strongly reformist and in favour of the Euclean Community. The EO programme states it is a "young, innovative and progressive house, where new ideas for Werania and Euclea are launched" supporting the creation of a "democratic and liberal Werania within a united Euclea".
Although the majority of the EO comes from the Social Democratic Radical Party the party is not considered to be social democratic. According to political scientist Estelle Kleinmann the party's programme "takes great pains to avoid mentioning the traditional left-wing notion of a "social Werania" instead emphasising a more nebulous suggestion of being progressive and reformist". The party combines social and economic liberalism alongside strong support for the welfare state with party leaders calling for a reduction in bureaucracy, balancing the federal budget, pursuing welfare reform, introducing a wealth tax and liberalising immigration.
Factions
Euclean Werania contains within it several factions, some carried over from their predecessor parties. Like with the SRPO and unlike the NKP factions within Euclean Werania tend to be more based around ideology then personality or regional links.
- The largest faction are social liberals, with senior leaders such as Luise Höcherl and Edmund Remarque representing this tendency. Coming predominantly from the former right wing of the SRPO and left wing of the PMZ the liberals support a third way approaching combining neoliberalism with progressive social policies and expanding the welfare state. The liberals tend to also be strongly pro-Euclean.
- The conservative faction is on the right-wing of the party, mainly consisting of conservative liberals and liberal conservatives from the PMZ. The conservative faction supports strongly economic liberalism and a balanced budget but are more flexible on social issues with some being closer to progressive social views and others more conservative ones.
- The Sotirian faction comes from a fusion of Sotirian democrats from the PMZ and the Sotirian left from the SRPO. The Sotirian faction tend to be more pragmatic in terms of fiscal policy with some leaning closer to socialism and others neoliberalism. The faction is generally more conservative on some social issues such as abortion.
- The social democratic faction is amongst the largest in the party and represents the old centrist wing of the SRPO emphasising liberal socialism. The social democrats generally support a market economy within the framework of a social democratic state and are the most economically left wing of all the factions emphasising reducing inequality and promoting social diversity.
- The radical faction represent the non-socialist left in the party. Similar to the social democrats the radicals support a more interventionist economic policy although also put emphasis on republicanism and secularism. They are one of the smallest factions in the party.
