Gautenga, officially the Kingdom of Gautenga is a landlocked sovereign state in eastern Hesperidesia, in Astyria. The nation rests along the south bank of the Red River, between two major tributaries.
History
Evidence suggests that humans have lived in the area of modern Gautenga since the prehistoric times. The Gauteng people were first recorded by travellers from the Empire of Exponent i the early 900's, and the area would fall under Exponential rule during the Eastern Crusade. Following the Albandaean Crisis and the subsequent creation of the tribe-based Regio system, in which Hesperidesian Native groups were organized into native reservations to serve as "native homelands," the majority of the Gauteng people were concentrated in present-day Gautenga.
Hesperidesian Revolutions
During the Hesperidesian Revolutions, the Gauteng remained relatively peaceful, with armed Gauteng militia ejecting any Jafalan and Kwalawan insurgents that sought passage or refuge within Gautenga, while at the same time refusing to send men to assist the Imperial forces in the area. Following the treaty that ended the Hesperidesian Revolutions, area known as Regio Gautenga was granted its independence.
Geography
Gautenga rests prmarily on an elevated plain between three major rivers. Because of its elevation, Gautenga is relatively cooler when compared to neighboring area. Aside from the rivers, the nation is completely landlocked, and consists primarily of mountainous grasslands on which cattle and other livestock graze.
Politics
Gautenga is an absolute monarchy headed by the current king, Baruti II, according to Gauteng custom and laws. The King of the Gauteng is viewed as the national and spiritual head of the Gauteng people, and serves as the administrative head of state for Gautenga.
Forgeign Relations
Gautenga has regular territorial disputes with both Jafala and Kwalawi over grazing rights - particularly during the dry season when the tributaries that comprise the nation's western and eastern borders begin to dry up, allowing herds to cross in both directions.
Gautenga is also a member of the Hesperidesian Union and the East Astyrian Treaty Alliance.
Gauteng Defense Force
The Gauteng Defence Force (GDF) is charged with the maintenance of internal security and the defence of Gautenga. The force comprises about 2,000 personnel, with an army and a small air wing. As a member of the East Astyrian Treaty Alliance, Gautenga relies heavily upon the Blackhelm Confederacy to guarantee its external security.
Demographics
Gautenga is a rarity in Hesperidesia in the fact that it is made up overwhelmingly of members of one single ethnic group and language, with 99.7% of people within the nation being members of the Gauteng tribe.
Culture
Religion
As a result of more than a millenia of occupation by the Empire of Exponent, the majority of Gautenga is practicing Roman Catholic. There are, however, still some pockets of native religious adherents, and the number of practitioners of native religion has been growing slightly in the area in recent years.
Cuisine
The cuisine of Gautenga reflects the unique blend of traditional Central Hesperidesian foods and spices. "Mashwilwi," a type of maize meal, is the staple food and is used to make the popular dish "bhutheli," a type of porridge mixed with water, salt, and oil. Rich and flavorful soups and stews like "mphala," a pumpkin and maize soup, and "tshwirira," a peanut butter chicken stew, are also popular. The country is also home to a variety of meat dishes, including grilled "lemutsha" and slow-cooked "litaba." The sweet and decadent desserts such as "dibhora" cake and "mafenya" fried dough balls are also very popular, and have made their way into neighboring areas as well.
