The Socialist Republic of Dau Sel is divided into 14 separate cúigí, or provincial level administrative divisions, largely based on historic, cultural, or linguistic borders. There are 8 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, and 1 government administrative region. The most populous province is Croílár with almost 5 million inhabitants. The least populous is Heimströnd with less than 200 thousand inhabitants. Each province is allotted a seat in the Teach Cúige (Provincial House) for every 100,000 residents, rounding up.
Types of Provincial Level Regions
Government Administrative Region
The capital city of Príombar and the surrounding metro area are categorized as a government administrative region. This means that the national government takes more direct control over this region than it does with any other region. With Príombar being the capital it naturally has a closer tie than most to the national government.
Province
The standard division at this level is the province. These regions are where the vast majority of Dau Selans reside. Provinces are subject to the national government but not usually as directly as the government administrative region of Príombar. They are somewhat of a middle ground between government administrative regions and autonomous regions. These regions were created partially along historical boundaries but mainly to divide the populous somewhat equitably. Today all provinces have a population between 3 and 4.9 million.
Autonomous Region
Five areas are designated as autonomous regions, these are Pojonen Kotima, Pritfear, Raniko Nisama, Gulksten, and Heimströnd. These five regions are given greater independence over how they operate but the national government does retain the right to step in should they decide to do so. These regions were given this more autonomous status due to their significant amount of minority cultures and languages. These 5 regions are all located in the relatively sparsely populated north of Dau Sel. That means that despite being the 5 largest regions by land area they are also the 5 least populous regions.
