The Scholarian Guard (Latin: Scholae Palatinae), or Scholarians, is a branch of the Latin Armed Forces charged with police duties under the Ministry of Defense. Since December 2016, the Scholarian Guard is under administration of the Praetorian Guard, set to be reinstitute as a branch in summer 2019. The Scholarians are gendarmerie of Latium , policing both civil and military populations, and are always considered to be on duty. The Scholarian Guard was first founded in 5th century AD as a possible replacement for the Praetorian Guard, instead the Scholarians formed the core bodyguard of the Latin Emperor until the 10th century when it was transformed into a special force with in the legions. The Scholarians became a police force around 1739 in Alexandria, later a national police force by the 19th century.
