The Scholarian Guard (Latin: Scholae Palatinae), or Scholarians, charged with national police duties under the nominal direction of the Master of Offices. The Scholarians are gendarmerie of Latium , policing both civil and military populations, and are always considered to be on duty. The Scholarian Guard was first founded in 5th century AD as a possible replacement for the Praetorian Guard, instead the Scholarians formed the core bodyguard of the Latin Emperor until the 10th century when it was transformed into a special force with in the legions. The Scholarians became a police force around 1739 in Ascanium, later a national police force by the 19th century.
