The 1989 Besmenian federal election took take place on September 3, 1989 in Besmenia. It was the election of the 19th Federal Chamber.

Issues and campaign

Candidates

FBBP

Prime Minister Martin Beiter, who was also FBBP chairman, ran as FBBP candidate for the fourth time.

BVP

The BVP had put its chairman, Erik Tautenbach, in the running as a prime minister candidate. Tautenbach became BVP chairman in 1985, succeeding Michael Möhring. Under Tautenbach, the BVP was since 1986 able to record high electoral successes after the party lost massive votes as a result of the Gleitzmann scandal.

SDU

The Federal Minister for Finance and Vice Prime Minister Doris Klammer-Brunt ran for the SDU a second time as prime minister candidate.

GPB

Ingrid Sölter, Member of the Federal Chamber, was nominated as prime minister candidate for the GPB.

BRP

For the BRP, Helmut Schwarzberg run a second time as the BRP candidate in the Federal Chamber election.
