A Peerage of Petra is a hereditary distinction in the nobility of Petra. The titles held in the Peerage of Petra are the highest-ranking individuals in Petran nobility, sworn to the Prince of Petra. These include the four original Petran titles created following the Second Western Crusade and the establishment of the independent Principality of Petra. Despite Petra now being a country-province of Sydalon, Petra, headed by the Prince, maintains a distinct system of nobility independent of the Sydalene nobility. All peers swear allegiance to the Prince of Petra, rather than the Monarch of Sydalon, to whom no such obligation is owed. Currently there are 5 extant peerages (all counts), with 1 vacant duchy that is granted to the Prince's heir apparent.
List of peers
While Petra is today a special administrative division of Sydalon, its status is that of country, and is ruled by the Prince of Petra, a title traditionally held by the Monarch of Sydalon's heir apparent. There are two types of peerage in Petra.
The highest ranked peers are the ancient peers. These peerages were created following the establishment of the crusader Principality in the mid to late 13th century. All ancient peers trace their roots to crusaders rewarded for their service by Belandra I. There are typically no more than 5 (or 6 if the Duchy of Diban is held by the Prince's heir apparent). The most recent creation of a peerage was in 1980 with the re-creation of the Duchy of Tabada to Rainier I, Duke of Ramitha as part of the agreement that led to the restoration of the senior Garzan claim to the County of Ordaz.
The other form of peerage is peerage of the blood. These peerages are sparingly created, but similar to the granting of lesser peerages of the blood in Sydalon and the comital rank. There are currently no extant peerages of the blood in Petra.
