Vesperia (Vesperian: Vesperland) is a province in northern Arkiasis. It is the largest and most populous province and largest Vesperian-speaking province in Arkiasis. Its capital, Ålstad is the seat of the regional government and the largest city in the province. Currently, the regional government is controlled by the Vesperian People's Party (Vesperland Folkparti), a separatist party.
From 874 until unification in 1804 Vesperia was an independent nation. In 1684, the two monarchies of Vesperia and Arkiasia entered a personal union when Eric III of Vesperia also became Eric I of Arkiasia. Eventually, Vesperia and Arkiasia united to form the United Kingdom of Arkiasia and Vesperia (or commonly known as just Arkiasia) in 1804.
Vesperia is constitutionally granted additional autonomy over its internal matters in order to take into account cultural differences and protect linguistic minorities. In 2015, Vesperia narrowly voted against secession from Arkiasis.
Etymology
Vesperia is commonly accepted as Latin for "land of the evening star" and the Vesperian name, "Vesperum", translates simply to "evening star" in Latin. The name is taken from the planet Venus, which is commonly seen shining in the western sky after sunset. The name was adopted following the introduction of Christianity and the Latin alphabet in the Middle Ages.
