The 1986 World Cup, also called the 1986 Laitstadt World Cup, was an international football tournament contested by men's national teams which took place between 12 April to 19 April, 1986 in Laitstadt, Besmenia. It was the 14th World Cup, a worldwide football tournament held once every year. The tournament phase involved 32 teams, of which all came through qualifying competitions at the start of the event from an original 64 national teams.

31 national teams advanced through qualification competitions to join the host nation in the final tournament, with a total of 64 matches played in 5 venues. Avergnon won the tournament, claiming their first World Cup title.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony took place on Saturday, 12 April 1986, at the Laitstadt Olympic Stadium, beginning with the opening speech by Besmenian president Otto Schulz. In addition to domestic guests such as Prime Minister Martin Beiter and Mayor and Governor of Laitstadt Wilfried Kuschke, numerous international guests and state leaders were also present during the opening ceremony.

Qualifying Rounds

64 competing countries were divided into eight groups of eight teams (groups A to H). Teams in each group played one another in a round-robin best two-out-of-three, with the top four teams advancing to the knockout stage with the Round of 32.

The sponsors of the 1986 World Cup were divided into three categories: World Cup Partners, World Cup Sponsors and National Supporters. The National Supporters were all Besmenian sponsors.

Controversies

Neo-Ochsenbeinism

It has been claimed by some foreign media, similar to the coverage of the 1976 Olympics, that "foreign-looking" people should not visit some areas in former fascist West Besmenia after violent clashes between supporters of Neo-Ochsenbeinism and foreigners in the past came. Since the Besmenian reunification, there has been a small but vocal Neo-Ochsenbeinism minority who have committed violent attacks against immigrants and foreign visitors to the country since the late 1960s. Although there has been a decline in xenophobic attacks in the West Besmenian states since the 1980s, some foreign media still advised foreigners to visit only eastern Besmenia. Some media which mentioned this "recommendation" met with mild criticism from high Besmenian politicans, including some governors of the West Besmenian states.

The broadcasting rights of the 1986 World Cup in the host nation Besmenia were given to the BRF, which broadcasted the matches on BRF EINS.
