Eliisabeþ "Liis" Jonsdohter (Azmaran: [liːs jonz'doxtəɹ]; born 20 February 1965) is an Azmaran politicanwho has served as Secretary of State for Energy, Climate and Economic Affairs in the government of Freidrik Aleksaanderssun since 2023 and as Leader of the Green Party of Azmara since 2020, having previously served as Leader between 2008 and 2018. One of the longest-serving Azmaran ministers of the 21st century, Jonsdohter has also variously served in the governments of Sofija Anasdohter Eryk Jorśsun, Niina Hermansdohter, Stefan Aansgaarssun and Helmut Þurisassun in the Euclean Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Energy and Climate Change and Education and Research portfolios.

A human geographer by training, Jonsdohter has served as a Member of the Folksmot for Aalmsted since 1999 and is widely considered the de facto leader of the Azmaran environmental movement, consistently ranking as one of the country's most popular politicians. Jonsdohter was also the presidential candidate of the Green and Ecologist Movement in the 2017 Euclean presidential election, in which she would finish in fifth place and fail to advance to the runoff but would win the popular vote in her home country.

Early life, education and career

Jonsdohter was born in the Aalmsted suburb of Iselgaarden, Groonbank into a middle-class family - her father was a priest of the Church of Azmara and her father taught Azmaran Studies at Iselgaarden Gymnasium, which Jonsdohter would attend between 1979 and 1983. Jonsdohter has stated that her parents were "not overtly political" and supported the Workers' Party, and that her political awakening was the breakaway of the Azmaran Democrats in 1982.

Jonsdohter would study for a degree geography and history at St Mary's College in the University of Aalmsted. During her time at St Mary's she would gain an interest in conservation issues and, after serving as an intern for Azmaran Democrats leader Wiljâm Maartenssun's successful 1986 campaign for Mayor of Aalmsted, would grow disillusioned with the party and defect to the newly-formed Green Party.

Jonsdohter would stay at St. Mary's after gaining her bachelor of arts degree, completing a masters' degree in human geography and gaining a doctorate in 1991 for a thesis on the intersection between the natural environment and a country's macroeconomic performance. After taking a three year break to care for her children, Jonsdohter would return to work at St. Mary's as a junior lecturer and researcher in 1994.

Personal life

Jonsdohter married fellow St. Mary's College doctoral candidate Aksel Alekssun in 1991 in a Church of Azmara ceremony officiated in Iselgaarden Church by her father. The couple live in a four-bedroom apartment in the Borough of Eleinasburg neighbourhood of Iseltuun and have two adult sons. In a 2013 interview Jonsdohter stated that she had encouraged her sons to "stay away from politics" - her elder son works in the civil service as a diplomat while her younger son works as a psychologist.

Jonsdohter is a practicing member of the Church of Azmara, stating in 2013 that her religious faith had helped her "keep going in the tough world of politics", but emphasised that the Church was "not the only answer to life's great questions". She is a pescetarian and teetotaler, and a keen cyclist.
