The Battle of Ciudad Rey Alfonso I is a major ongoing battle of the Deltinian Insurgency. The battle began on January 11, 2020, in the city of Ciudad Rey Alfonso I in the department of Deltino, Creeperopolis.

The battle began shortly after the Deltinian Liberation Army's victory in the Battle of Rushdi the day earlier. The DLA has used car bombs to intimidate civilians to join their side.[1][2][3] Meanwhile, the Creeperans use chemical weapons to intimidate civilians to join their side.[citation needed]

Background

Military Situation

In the years before the beginning of the battle, southern Creeperopolis was ravaged by the Third Senvarian Insurgency. The Creeperian Armed Forces and the Senvarian Liberation Front often engaged in battles on Deltinian soil. The Deltinians were often caught in the crossfires of battle between the Creeperans and the Senvar-Senvekians, accounting for around 5-10% of all deaths in the department of Deltino.

Battle

January 2020

The battle began on January 11, 2020 with the Creeperian Army arriving at the outskirts of the city.[4] The army begins artillery shelling the city in order to weaken defenses before entering the city to weed out insurgents and secure the strategic city from Deltinian hands. On the same day, the Creeperian Army intercepted a message from Morova offering support to the Deltinian Liberaion Army.[5][6]

A car bomb exploded in the city on January 15, 2020, killing 11 Creeperian soldiers, 1 DINA agent, 67 Deltinian civilians, and 2 DLA fighters. The DLA claimed responsibility and declared its support for Morova against the Armas Blockade, which was established following the passing of TCN Resolution 005.[7][8] The DLA stated it will support the Morovans by "bringing down the Creeperian-Castillianan-Senvarian Regime."[9] The Creeperiano Government executed 70 captured DLA fighters today for their alleged role in the car bombing which killed 81 people, mostly civilians. The 70 were executed by firing squad.[10]

By January 17, 2020, the Creeperian Army has taken a quarter of Ciudad Rey Alfonso I.[11] Later that day, a splinter from the Deltinian Liberation Army called the "United Liberation Alliance and Patriotic Front for the National Emancipation and Proclamation of Deltino for the Establishment of a Republic in Creeperopolis and the Southern Landmass - The Nationalist Patriotic Front in Southern Creeperopolis for Revolution and the Establishment of an Independent, Free, and Democratic Deltinian State," simply called the United Liberation Alliance of Deltino, declared jihad on the DLA and Creeperian government for not protecting the Deltinian people.[12] Shortly there after, the "Deltinian Liberation and Patriotic Alliance of Great Revolutionary Jihadist Fighters of Allah, the One True God, and of the Great Islamic State of the Renewed Caliphate of the Deltinian Fatherland and Deltinian People for the Liberation and Emancapation and Freedom of the Oppressed Deltinians in Creeperopolis and the Southern Landmass for the Revolution of Democracy and Restoration of the Holy Throne of Deltino - The Militarist Patriotic and Revolutionary Democratic Military Armed Allied Front for Revolutionary Revolution in Southern Creeperopolis and the Forces for the Defense of the Deltinian Caliphate and of the Great Deltinian People," simply called the Deltinian Patriotic Alliance, declared its splinter from the ULAD citing a disagreement in leadership.[13]

The DLA was believed to be hiding in a mosque in the city and was using it as a sniper's nest. As to save Creeperian solders' lives, the Army deployed mustard gas and released it into the mosque at sunset. One hour after the gas was released, a team of 30 soldiers entered to clear the area. About 68 supposed DLA fighters were killed in the gas clearing. The mosque was burned to prevent it being used as a hideout in the future on January 18, 2020.[14]

On January 20, 2020, the Deltinian Liberation Army detonated 4 car bombs in Ciudad Rey Alfonso I killing 87 people.[15] Later that day, the 11th Ground Attack Wing of the Lyoa National Air Force bombed several positions allegedly held by militants of the Deltinian Liberation Army.[16] The next day, the 11th Ground Attack Wing bombed a position of alleged Deltinian Patriotic Alliance rebels followed by more bombings of the DLA on January 25, 2020.[17][18]

The capitol building of Ciudad Rey Alfonso I was looted and burnt to the ground by jihadists of the Deltinian Liberation Army on January 27, 2020.[19] The same day, the 11th Ground Attack Wing struck an alleged DLA camp with air to ground missiles and then again on January 29, 2020.[20][21]

The 11th Ground Attack Wing struck several frontline positions of the Deltinian Liberation Army near the southern coast on January 31, 2020. The LNAF reported that 13-17 DLA fighters were killed.[22]

February 2020

On February 1, 2020, hospital was set on fire in Ciudad Rey Alfonso I. The perpetrators are still unknown.[23]

The Creeperian Air Force is claimed to have dropped mustard gas in Ciudad Rey Alfonso I. The FAC denied the allegations.[24]

The Deltinian Liberation Army claimed responsibility for three car bombings in Ciudad Rey Alfonso I which occurred on February 4, 2020.[25]

On February 5, 2020, the Battle of Ciudad Rey Alfonso I officially became the deadliest ongoing battle of the Deltinian Insurgency. Deaths were estimated to be in the tens of thousands.[26]

On February 6, 2020, President Kemoh Foday of Lyoa offered to send 1,500 LNDF troops to Ciudad Rey Alfonso I to further assist in counter-terrorist operations against the Deltinian Liberation Army. He stated that the troops will be from the 4th Division, also known as the "Machete Legion", which was originally made up of former RUF fighters from the Lyoan Civil War. The Machete Legion is known for its efficiency, as well as its brutality, making it one of the LNDF's best.[27] The offer was accepted by Augusto Cabañeras Gutiérrez.[28]
