The Coastal Crisis was a confrontation between Senria and Xiaodong in southern Coius that started due to the Xiaodongese invasion of Baishadao and ended with the CN-brokered Sangang Agreement. It is considered one of the closest times in human history nuclear weapons could have been used in warfare after Xiaodong during the crisis detonated Housheng, its first operational nuclear weapon.

The island of Baishadao had been an Estmerish colony until 1957 when it gained independence under a pro-Senrian government despite being traditionally part of Xiaodong with a large amount of citizens wishing for union with Xiaodong. In 1972 a government that supported reunification with Xiaodong was elected that in 1975 held a successful referendum that approved of the goal of unification. As a result of this a military coup d'état was executed - with suspected Senrian support - that installed a junta that rejected union with Xiaodong. As a result of the coup d'état on [date] Xiaodong undertook a full-scale invasion of the island to restore the pre-coup government, being able to successfully occupy the island within a week.

The invasion prompted international condemnation and on [date] Senrian prime minister Takesi Takahata ordered two fleets of the Senrian Republican Navy to enter Xiaodongese territorial waters. Takahata stated that Senria intended to force Xiaodong to withdraw troops from Baishadao as well as abide by conditions stipulated in the Treaty of Keisi such as payment for reparations occurred in the Great War, as Senria still recognised the Treaty as legally still being in force.

The deployment of the fleets saw Xiaodong attempt to escort them out of Xiaodongese territorial waters; this was a failure with on the [date] a skirmish breaking out. Although it has never been determined who started the skirmish it resulted in four Xiaodongese ships and three Senrian ones being sunk.

The skirmish put both nations on war footing with negotiations temporarily breaking down, with Senria performing several naval exercises as well as deploying aircraft into Xiaodongese airspace, aiming to rally international support for the possibility of waging a preventive war against Xiaodong. However on the [date] Xiaodong unexpectedly tested a nuclear device - Housheng - making it the first nation outside the Treaty of Shanbally to publicly demonstrate possession of nuclear weapons. Although the test was seen as hurriedly carried out and increase international sanctions on Xiaodong, it also saw a dramatic escalation of the crisis with some fearing the possibility of nuclear war between Senria and Xiaodong.

As a result of the testing of Housheng, representatives from several states managed to convince Takahata and Xiaodongese leader Sun Yuting to re-enter negotiations for a resolution in the Baean city of Sangang. After several days of tense negotiations the Sangang Agreement was signed - Xiaodong would pay compensation for the sinking of Senrian ships and withdraw troops from Baishadao in exchange for Senria to leave Xiaodongese territorial waters and drop recognition for the military junta in Baishadao, instead recognising the pre-coup government. Xiaodongese nuclear non-proliferation talks and renegotiation of Treaty of Keisi reparations were set to be discussed at a later date but these never transpired due to disagreements in prerequisites in negotiations. In 1977 Xiaodong formally annexed Baishadao after it again confirmed in a referendum to join Xiaodong, although the referendum was accused by Senria of being rigged.

The Coastal Crisis saw a major shift in the balance of power in Coius, as Senria was unable to muster the same international support as it had done in [previous times/crisis???] and Xiaodong became the eighth nation to posses nuclear weapons. Although seen at the time as favouring neither sides modern political analysts state the crisis was more beneficial for Xiaodong as it undermined Senrian authority in Coius and allowed Xiaodong to reassert itself as a great power after a period of passivity following the Great War.
