Sovar remained independent until it was annexed by Rythene in 1552. Under Rythenean rule the Sovarese language was repressed and all official business was conducted in Rythenean. At the outbreak of the Rythenean Revolution in 1790, Sovarese officials and various locals took control of the region's administrative building in Lagurstad and declared their support for the Rebellion. Despite small skirmishes by Monarchist supporters the islands would remain relatively peaceful compared to Rythene.
In 1952 an autonomous Parliament on the islands was established and Sovarese was adopted as the island's co-official language alongside Rythenean in a referendum in 1952. Shortly after this a Broken Arrow took place near the town of Palheim. 132 People were killed and the incident became the cause of a surge in support for Sovarese Independence. In a referendum in 1971, 68% of voters in the country voted to secede from Rythene and the country formally declared independence the following year.
Following independence, the Nationalist Sovarese Independence Party collapsed into several smaller parties, the largest being the Republican Party and the Progressive Party. The Republican party would remain in government from 1977 to 2012 when the Progressive Party along with other opposition parties formed the first ever Government without the Republicans.
