In 1952 an autonomous Parliament on the islands was established and Sovarese was adopted as the island's co-official language alongside Rythenean in a referendum in 1952. Shortly after this a nuclear weapons accident took place near the town of Palheim. 132 People were killed and the incident became the cause of a surge in support for Sovarese Independence.
