The Royal Coast Guard of the Union is the maritime security service branch of the Durnian Military. It is the smallest branch of the Durnian military and the second youngest.
The Royal Coast Guard was formed as an off-shoot of the Federal Navy on April 23rd, 1823 for the purposes of defending Durnian shipping from pirates and privateers. The force consisted entirely of older naval vessels donated by the Federal Navy, many of which would have been decommissioned had they not been reassigned. Of the 12 ships initially assigned to the branch, all but 1 would remain in service until 1876 when wooden-hulled vessels were entirely phased-out. Following the global decline in piracy during the mid-1900's and in response to the massive advancements in naval technology during the Aurelia War, the Royal Coast Guard shifted almost entirely to a quick response force while anti-piracy duties became a secondary concern following the Malý Act.
By the year 2000, the rapid expansion of organized crime within Durnstaal had prompted the interception of illegal goods being transported via watercraft across the Albarine Sea and Lake Gravenna to become a top priority for the branch. Royal Coast Guard vessels work closely with the CIB to seize vessels being used for drug smuggling and human trafficking. All patrol vessels have an assigned CIB liaison.
