Nevel (pronounced /neːv(ə)l/, Nevel dialect: Nevůnhulir, pronounced /neʋʊnhʏlɪɹ/) is a province of Vyvland located in its far west. Its capital and largest city is Byzvild, and it is home to the bulk of Vyvland's Geadish community in addition to the dormant Melers Volcano. The province is among the poorest areas in Vyvland.

History

Nevel was one of the last areas to be densely settled by humans, due to its boggy ground, rainy climate, tough terrain and poor soils, and it still remains sparsely populated. However, this sparse population was an incentive for Geadish settlement in the Lishag area in the far south of the province, first in the 1490s to escape from the country's plague epidemic, and again in the 17th century to escape persecution of Protestants. The continued isolation of the province has led to an extremely conservative distinctive dialect which persists to this day.

Nevel was controlled by the nationalist South Vyvlander government, and was its furthest north territory. Nevel was one of Amiral Jueves's key support bases, despite the expulsion of Swedes from the province in 1958, in which an estimated 24,000 out of 46,000 resident Swedes died. The area suffered further setbacks after the Haddock Sea flood of 1955 and Great August Storm, both of which hit Nevel hard.

Geography

The central area of the province around the River Ryzer is largely boggy, while the areas around it are mountainous. Byzvild is situated on the estuary of the Ryzer, at the bottom of the Bajre Mountains which separate the province from Bajre to the northeast. Woijyt, in Nevel's east, is situated in rolling hills.

The most densely populated part of the province outside Byzvild is the area around Langmaaf in the south, which historically had a large wool industry, but is today something of a suburb of Strossen, which lies seven miles to the east. South of Langmaaf is the Lishag peninsula, which contains tough terrain before falling away to a small plain at its tip, centred round its eponymous capital city, built in the Geadish style, and passenger port with ferries to Kirklund in Txotai and Arje in Leghel.

Governance

Historically, the province has been a hotbed of nationalist sentiments, and as such, the Nationals are the largest party in the Provincial Diet. However, unlike in other parts of the country, the Nationals' support in Nevel has been decreasing - a trend which has been attributed to Nevel's greater opening up to its surrounds, as well as a lessening sense of anti-Geadish and anti-Swedish sentiment. The Provincial Diet is currently controlled by a coalition between the Liberals, Conservatives, Capitalists and Geadish People's Party.
