The Minister of Justice of the Empire Of Makko Oko is the head of the Ministry of Justice and the chief attorney of the state. The title has existed since the conclusion of the Civil Transition War in 2019 to replace the former Department of Justice established by the Republic Government.

The first Minister of Justice was Sara Mauer, who had a lengthy career history and spared soldiers of the CNF from the death penalty in trials as a judge on the Supreme Court. They served for over eight years, with their appointment ending on October 22nd, 2027. Some of the things the Minister does is meeting with cabinet ministers and other leaders in the nation regarding domestic matters in relation to the law, prosecuting offenders, etc.

History

Prior to the present-day Minister of Justice title being incorporated, it was known as the Chief Secretary of Justice, which led the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice was incorporated in 1972 as a way to centralize all legal efforts committed by the government, which prior to then, each department had its own legal facilities and handled their respective parts, but now, the DoJ was to handle all of it for the entire government, which was also mandated to the courts through the ratification of the Justice Restructuring Act 1972.

The Department of Justice would see a modernization come the early 2000's with the ratification of the Youth Criminal Liability Act 2003, which took away some of the DoJ's legal responsibilities and handed them off to the Department of Youth & Social Services in addition to permitting government departments to handle their own legal affairs as long as the Secretary of Legal Policy signed off, which helped to lower the workload they were seeing at the time.

There would be very little changes after this until after the end of the Civil Transition War when the department would be transformed into the Ministry of Justice and the legal facilities would be given back to the individual departments, with the MoJ still having primary jurisdiction.

Appointment

The Minister of Justice, like all other ministers in the cabinet, are direct appointees of the Emperor. They serve at their leisure and command.

Powers and Responsibilities

The Minister of Justice is the highest-ranking and most powerful lawyer in the nation, and the government's top attorney in all affairs that involve them. The Minister of Justice can choose to personally represent the government in any case of their choice, hire/fire ministerial and department-level staff, and write orders and memorandums on prosecutions, prosecution policies and to ensure stability of any court case.

President of the Law Council

Per Article 37 of the Constitution, the Minister of Justice shall preside over, manage and oversee the Law Council, the nation's parliament. The minister may, however, have somebody fill in for them on an as-needed basis, but otherwise, the minister is the only person authorized to be the president of the council.
