The consort of the Sydalene monarch is the spouse of the reigning King or Queen. Consorts of the monarch are afforded a limited constitutional role, which can be expanded under any given monarch. Consorts are often key members of the High Court, and have significant influence over the monarch. The current consort is Prince Michael of Dakmoor, who married Queen Melisende III in 2018.
Titles
A monarch may grant any titles to his or her consort. Consorts may, often times, retain any titles they held prior to becoming consort, as is the case when a consort is a title holder in his or her own right. Traditionally, the spouse of a reigning king is titled Queen consort. A spouse of a Queen regnant has held differing titles throughout history. The first male consort of Sydalon was Richard I, Prince of Ostracine, who became King of Sydalon jure uxoris after the ascension of his wife Queen Anna. King Richard was the only instance of a male consort holding the title of king. From 1504 until 1835, the male consort of a queen regnant held no title. Michael Claudius became the first male consort to hold the title of Prince Consort, which has since become the traditional title granted to a male consort.
Exceptions exist where a consort may not be granted any title. This can occur when a monarch's spouse dies, is divorced or the marriage is rendered invalid, before ascension. The most recent instance of this was the marriage of Queen Melisende III to Godfrey Galan, married 13 June 2012 and annulled on 23 April 2016.
