Maryam Rahmadisoerja (Jawi: مريم رحمديسوريا; born 16 January 1959) is a Hindia Belandan politician, businesswoman and socialite who has been the 85th Governor-General of Hindia Belanda since 1 December 2017. A former Republican, her appointment as Governor-General in 2017 following a brief selection process by the All-party Joint Committee on Viceregal Appointments, which was dominated by the ruling National Indies Party, was highly controversial and contested by some opposition parties and royalist figures in the country.

Before serving as Governor-General, Rahmadisoerja served as a Director of Republik Hindia Belanda for six years and campaigned on the organisation's behalf for the abolishment of the Hindia Belandan monarchy and the establishment of a republic. She also owned two boutique hotels, the Maryanusa in Bandar Kunti and the Mayra in Tanau, the ownerships of which were temporarily transferred to her husband, Darius Rahmadisoerja, and eldest son, Edwin Maryampoetra Rahmadisoerja, in a lease agreement shortly before becoming Governor-General. Her younger son, Dion Maryampoetra Rahmadisoerja, similarly took charge of her youth empowerment organisation Muda Mudi. She along with her husband also operated Meals for Astyria, a food bank based in Jakarta focussing on providing struggling communities in developing Astyrian countries access to food.

Rahmadisoerja is a known proponent of the Valkean Model, having previously spoken in favour of the economic model on numerous occasions whilst serving in Republik Hindia Belanda, although she has remained publicly apolitical since becoming vicereine. Her close ties to high-ranking National Indies Party politicians have raised concerns on her ability to maintain impartiality in the execution of her viceregal duties. Her overt republicanism prior to becoming Governor-General has also raised concerns amongst royalists. Rahmadisoerja's tenure as Governor-General is noted for a major commitment to the promotion of the arts, the creative industries and environmentalism, in line with the legislative agenda of the government of the day.

Early life and education

Rahmadisoerja was born at Ziekenhuis Santo Stefanus in Weltevreden, Jakarta on 16 January 1959 to Mochammad Aljalil Moestakim, a businessman of Riysan descent, and Melati Hardjokoesoema, a distant member of the princely house of Pakualam. Her paternal grandfather, Sjech Madjid Aljalil Moestakim, was the last Kapitan Riysa before the independence of Hindia Belanda.

Rahmadisoerja is a graduate of the University of Jakarta at Serikunti, where she read political science, and the Some Art School in Koln, where she received her master's degree in fine art. It was during her studies in Cologne that Rahmadisoerja first met Dewi Kartasoekarti, former Governor-General of Hindia Belanda and a fellow artist, who was an alumnus and patron of the school with whom Rahmadisoerja has close relationship. Rahmadisoerja and Kartasoekarti are both known for their continual efforts to promote the arts, Hindia Belandan or otherwise. As a young student of fine art, Rahmadisoerja was a beneficiary of Kartasoekarti's Atelier Nusantara programme, which provides Hindia Belandan art students with the opportunity to take a residency in a number of ateliers owned by the Hindia Belandan government in Koninstad. From 1987 until 1989, Rahmadisoerja worked for SOME NONPROFIT ORGANISATION in Källälivi, where she witnessed first hand Valkean economic boom following the fall of the Kansallist regime.

The appointment of Rahmadisoerja as Governor-General of Hindia Belanda took place on 1 December 2017, when Queen Anne-Charlotte II formally accepted her nomination. However, it was widely rumoured in Hindia Belanda that the Royal Household exhibited apprehension at her appointment and was reluctant to approve the nomination. The appointment of a known Republican as Governor-General was also considered by political analysts to be a show of force on the part of Antje Moeljani and her government, as although the Royal Household may have been unwilling to approve the nomination they were nonetheless legally bound to approve it.

Personal life

She is married to Darius Rahmadisoerja, with whom she has 4 children.

Religion

Registered member of the Shia Convocation.

Titles, styles and arms

Titles and styles

  • 1984-2017: Raden Ayu Panembahan (courtesy title of her husband, who is styled Raden Mas Panembahan by virtue of being the grandson of a sibling of the head of the Princely House of Soerakarta)
  • 2017-present: Yang Teramat Mulia Seri Padoeka Yang Dipertuan Besar Governor-General Maryam Rahmadisoerja, Commander-in-Chief.

Rahmadisoerja still holds the style of Raden Ayu Panembahan due to her marriage to Darius Rahmadisoerja, who is the grandson of the Princely King of Soerakarta's younger brother, but she has opted not to style herself thus following her accession to the viceregal throne in 2017. Otherwise, she would have been styled as Yang Teramat Mulia Seri Padoeka Yang Dipertuan Besar Raden Ayu Panembahan Governor-General Maryam Rahmadisoerja, Commander in Chief.

By being the Viceregal Consort of Hindia Belanda, her husband is styled as Yang Teramat Mulia Yang Dihormati and similarly has opted not to use his primary nobility title of Raden Mas Panembahan for as long as Rahmadisoerja remains Governor-General.

The children of the incumbent Governor-General of Hindia Belanda also hold a diminutive version of the Viceregal Consort's title, which is Yang Teramat Dihormati, although Rahmadisoerja's children have refused to be styled thus.
