Administrative divisions of Ainin

The administrative divisions of Ainin are the various stages of government in Ainin below the national level. As Ainin is a de facto federation, these governments have a substantial degree of autonomy and authority.

As of April 2016, the Aininian Republic is divided into the following administrative divisions:

• 14 provinces and province-level jurisdictions (13 provinces plus the Charline Islands)
• 50something regions
• 1000something prefectures and prefecture-level divisions
• 6000something cantons and boroughs
• 2 sovereign states in free association

First-level divisions

Provinces

The first-level administrative divisions in the subnational framework of Ainin is the province. They are provided for by Article IV of the Constitution of Ainin and hold their powers under the Twenty-third Amendment thereof. They have an elected legislature and government, and have substantial lawmaking powers in the realms of education, infrastructure, social policy and economic development. Laws passed by provincial governments can be cancelled by the National Assembly of Ainin, although in practice this is a rare occurrence. Provincial governments do not collect taxes, and are instead funded through the Equalisation Transfer Scheme.

Territories

Territorial agglomerations are another type of first-level division. They have more autonomy over social policy and fiscal affairs and are permitted to directly level taxes. They are represented by one at-large deputy in the National Assembly. Ever since Concordia was elevated to an associated state, the only such division has been the Charline Islands.
