The Bar Regiment (士族, sdzreqs-tswak) was formed as the Honourable Rifle Company of the Bar in 1871, from current members of the Themiclesian Bar. The Company was formed after Camia and Maverica blockaded and threatened to invade Themiclesia in 1867 – 68, at which the Conservative government believed there was no chance of resistance; the following Liberal government called for wider participation in the armed forces by "respectable professions", which included groups like lawyers, accountants, physicians, and architects. The Company's original patron was the then Justiciar of Themiclesia the 6th Lord of Ran, but the position of patron is combined with the Justiciar.

The Company was part of the "Hundred Companies" policy announced by the prime minister the Lord of Sng'rja, meant to complement the existing Themiclesian land forces that numbered around 28,000 regular men and officers. By the end of his premiership, only 59 companies in 7,680 men were actually raised, though Sng'rja' considered it a success because he believed these men represented the influential classes that "lead now the nation at peace, and will lead the nation in war".

After the Prairie War turned against Themiclesia in 1935, the Government was concerned that the Army Academy could not provide sufficient officers to lead a much larger army created by conscription and thus commanded the Bar to provide basic training to its members, who were expected to serve as officers if the Academy could not respond to the demand. In 1936, the Company was expanded to regiment size, under a law that required all new members of the Bar to provide two years of military service. For the remainder of the war, the Bar Regiment co-ordinated with several similar units raised from professional associations and universities to supply junior officers to the front.
