Carlosian is a Romance language spoken in Carloso. While most similar to Spanish, it has some influence from English, Portuguese, Catalan and French. It is the co-official language of Carloso, alongside English.
Initially, Spanish; namely Early Modern Spanish, was the most widespread language in Carloso, however following independence in 1581 and the influx of large numbers of immigrants from Europe, the development of the language quickly began to diverge from mainstream Spanish, becoming even more distinct with the isolation of the rump Carlosian Directorate following the British conquest of most of Carloso in 1709. By the 1740s, the form of Spanish spoken in Carloso was so distinct that it became recognised as an entirely different language by Carlosian authorities, at least partially to consolidate the Carlosian identity in anticipation of the long struggle towards the liberation of British-occupied Carloso.
Carlosian and its progenitors were suppressed by British authorities in an attempt to anglicise the Carlosian population. It remained the dominant language in the unoccupied north-west of Carloso, corresponding to Zararcia, Colusia, Toro and the Cadena Islands, a position it still enjoys today. Following the Glorious War and the liberation of the occupied parts of Carloso, Carlosian authorities attempted to revive the use of Carlosian, albeit with initially limited success. Today, Carlosian is almost universally spoken as a second language in the English-speaking parts of Carloso, and is a popular language for students across Musgorocia.
