The Durnstaal Royal Air Force is the air service branch of the Durnian Military. It is the second largest branch of the Durnian military and also the youngest.
The DRAF is relatively young compared to other major air forces, having been founded in 1951, and has seen very little combat during its lifetime. However, it remains a well-equipped and trained force thanks to Durnstaal's heavy aeronautical industry keeping it modernized.
The DRAF was founded as an independent branch of the Durnian armed services on April 17th, 1951 in response to the effective use of air power during the Aurelia War by both sides. The newly created branch did not enter combat during the war, instead patrolling Durnian airspace and remaining on medium alert until the war's conclusion in 1954. Further concerns from the rapidly advancing nature of military aviation led to the continued growth and advancement of the DRAF throughout the 1960's, culminating in the creation of the Durnstaal Royal Space Corp within the DRAF in 1974 to defend against possible attacks from space.
The worldwide de-escalation of tensions throughout the 80's led to a refinement of the bloated and outdated branch into a modern force equivalent to other major powers. Sweeping reforms and updates occurred across the force, culminating in the separation of the DRSC from the DRAF in 1996. The first military UAV's entered service in 2014 and development of UAV technology has become a major focus of the branch.
The branch has seen little combat throughout its short history. Limited air power was used during the 1991 intervention in Saudi Jiddya although no direct confrontations occurred in the air. The last time the DRAF mobilized was in 2008 in response to the Winter Uprising where they created an air-cordon around Novada.
