Eisenmaat, officially The Kingdom of Eisenmaat, is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy in western Casaterra, Septentrion. Eisenmaat shares land borders with Federation of Socialist Republics to the north, Carinthia to the east, Bataviae to the west and Sieuxerr to the south. West coast of Eisenmaat borders Westgulf, providing the country free sea access.

Eisenmaat has a large population base of 70.62 million with a GDP of $2.5 trillion. It's capital city and the seat of government is Brauskonta, but the largest city is Forsazt. The Eisenmaat Mark (known by its shorter name, Eisenmark or €) is a gold standard currency, placing it nominally strong against other Casaterran currencies and a popular trade currency along with the Organized States Dollar.

Eisenmaat has been demographically described as majorly Finno-Germanic people, with some Sylvan and Letnev populations on the respective borders. Historically secular, the people of inland Eisenmaat are mostly a homologous culture, while the coastal and border regions are more known to have more mixed cultural values.

As a parliamentary constitutional monarchy, Eisenmaat is formally ruled by King Johan IV Charles of the House Hesself. Majority of legislative and executive power lies with the Common Assembly, led by Prime Minister Elika Kathe (National Combine).

The nation is known for relatively laissez-faire approach to foreign politics and economy, companies enjoying a high degree of freedom and stability due to national tendency towards neutrality. Boasting a high rate of industrialization from historically important coal and iron deposits, and well-available higher education, Eisenmaat ranks high on the development indices.

Etymology

The word for Eisenmaat derives from the name of Eisen peoples (lit. "of iron") of midlands, presumably due to historical iron production of the region, suffixed with the word "maat" ("lands"). Origin of the term is blurry and can be found in various texts. It was formally popularized in 600s by the Lord of Mutburg Heinerk II of House Martel and his Treatise of the Eisen People, where he officially referred to the people of his lands with the name.

History

Era of Citystates

(200s-1500s, infighting and local lords everywhere, invasion by that one Sylvan fuckboi, and subsequent fall back to infighting and local lords once he dieded)

Grand Unification

(mid 1500s, successful subjugation of the other states by the Tri-House Alliance, comprised of houses Martel, Hesself and Norvern, and the resulting Kingdom of Eisenmaat) Colonization of Wüstenfelsen in 1574.

Reform

(Mid-1800s reform from pure kingdom to a parliamentary system; improving civil representation and reducing workload of the royal court.)

War of Sylvan Succession (1909-1914)

Eisenmaat played a central role in the War of Sylvan Succession, which was the first world war of modern times with theaters of war in Sylva, Sardenya, Eisenmaat, Acores and at sea. Eisen policy of stabilizing and unifying Sylvan Commonwealth resulted in them backing the House de Carmen in the conflict, ensuring a continued peaceful relationship between the two major countries.

Modern history of Eisenmaat

After the major regional conflicts, Eisenmaat has stabilized itself as a major industrial and economic power of central Casaterra. Modern politics of Eisenmaat attempt to continue the independant national image of Eisen, with a credible defensive force and constant touch with the neighbouring countries. In 2017, this policy took a turn as the government decided to ratify the AVA, criticized as a public move against the Turov Pact by many opposition politicians.

Geography

Eisenmaat is located in mid-western Casaterra. Eisenmaat shares land borders with Federation of Socialist Republics to the north, Carinthia to the east, Bataviae to the west and Sieuxerr to the south. West coast of Eisenmaat borders the Westgulf. Eisenmaat has a landmass of 517'959,23 square kilometers, making it the fifth largest country in Casaterra after FSR, Sylva, Tiperyn and Sieuxerr.
Elevation ranges wildly - the Senschat mountain range can reach up to 3000 meters (3041 meters for Fattisteinkamm), while the lowlands around lake Usvaine next to Forsazt reach 2.3 meters below sea level. The flatlands of northern Eisenmaat house major forests and agricultural fields of the nation. Eisenmaat has five major rivers: rivers Viele, Voire and Usche run from the top of Senschat range in central region of the country, while rivers Drang and Stenne run from the southern portions of the range. Viele runs westward to Bataviae, Voire runs north-west to the capital region and passes through Brauskonta, while Usche drains into the lake Usvaine by Forsazt. Additionally, river Drang runs from southern portion of the range and passes near Drangburg, then to Carinthia, before turning back to pass by Ludwigshafen and drain into Westgulf at Grentz.

Climate

Eisenmaat, for most part, has a temperate oceanic Western Casaterran climate, with somewhat arctic-like mountain climate in the Senschat range. Summer temperatures can exceed 30°C in the south, winters tend to be mild, while the northern region is slightly cooler overall. Eisenmaat has no dry season - precipitation is consistently average around the year. In the mountain climate regions, lower temperatures and more precipitation is common.

Politics

The Common Assembly is the unicameral parliament of Eisenmaat. Executive branch of the government known as State Cabinet is formed by the government parties of the Assembly, often through their own negotiations - sometimes through Prime Minister's hand-picked list. Cabinet is approved by a simple majority vote in the Assembly, and can be dismissed by a similar vote of no confidence. Cabinets are generally formed from a multi-party coalition, as usually no one party dominates the Assembly.
As a rule, the largest party of the government holds the seat of Prime Minister, while smaller parties get to hold the seats of Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs through an unspoken rule of courtesy; the two most powerful seats after the PM's.

Law

The judicial system of Eisenmaat is a civil law system divided between courts of civil and criminal jurisdiction and administrative courts with jurisdiction over litigation between individuals or groups and the public administration. Overall crime rate of Eisenmaat is below the Casaterran average, and the residents report high confidence in the Eisen security institutions.
In 1992, the government was criticized over lack of transparency of the Eisen finances involving politicians and budgets, which led to the widely publicized "Östwich Reports"; a series of papers by Assembly speaker Reiner Östwich (Noble Reform) detailing every personal and public finance of the government and its members along with a high number of voluntary financial report releases by various members of the Assembly.

Foreign Relations

Eisenmaat is generally neutral in the Casaterran politics, with well-documented friendly history with the Commonwealth of Esylvaña. Eisenmaat shares a common alignment of interests with Sylva and Mozria in terms of regional politics. In 2017 the three nations signed the Able Vigil Accords, cementing an alliance between the nations aimed officially at the common defense of each's nation's neutrality. It has been criticized however as being a direct effort at containment towards both the Western Coalition and the Turov Pact.

Eisenmaat is a non-voting observer state of the Meridian Economic and Defensive Alliance and advocates the multi-national industrial benefits of the MEDA, which directly benefit the Eisen economy of advanced industry.

Military

Eisen military, the Armed Forces of Eisenmaat is organized into the Eisen Army, the Royal Navy, the Royal Eisen Airforce and the Eisen Border Guard. The Border Guard is under the authority of the Interior Ministry (similar to other law enforcement agencies), but can be slaved under the defense forces' Command Group if defense readiness so requires. All logistical duties are carried out by the Material Command Group, which is coordinated directly by the Command Group. Eisen military expenditure falls below the world average at $69.14 billion vs. the $92.06 bn, ranking #14.
The AFE employs around 180'000 personnel in full-time positions, along with 221'000 men in annual reserve training quota, which completes a rotation through the full reserve personnel rank every five years. Reservists actively volunteer for multinational training operations and peacekeeping deployments abroad, medical services most notably deployed in disputed regions of Meridia. Reservists, as per 1961 Military Reorganization Act, cannot be legally deployed in offensive operations without their consent.
Military service is selectively compulsory for men at age 18, and conscripts serve a nine to twelve months tour of duty; conscientious objectors are allowed to opt for civilian service of equal length instead. Selective recruitment is overseen by the Army Recruitment Bureau, who collect data and rank potential recruits through public data; this has been criticized by some as an opaque process with insufficiently grounded metrics. Speculators suspect the recruitment is mostly based on public school psychological evaluations and educational scores.

Economy

Eisenmaat has a coordinated market economy with a skilled labour force, key government-held companies, high score on innovation indices and a reportedly low level of corruption. The service sector produces majority of the total GDP, with approximately 63% share (2015), industry 33% and agriculture 4%.
Eisenmaat has a heavy innovation focus on the heavy industries, producing a notable share of the world's vehicles, machinery and electric infrastructure equipment. Other notable exports of Eisenmaat are chemical goods, information technology services, processed metals, pharmaceuticals, transport equipments, rubber, plastics and arms.

Energy and Infrastructure

Eisenmaat is a net energy exporter, slightly above consumption in it's production. In 2011, 41% of the Eisen electricity was produced by nuclear power, 30% by coal, 24% by gas and 5.1% by wind, hydro and other green sources.
Reduction in coal production has been projected to reduce the coal power production by a third of it's current wattage by 2035; Eisen government agencies are discussing with the green industries and nuclear power industries to come up with a long term plan of sustained energy independence.
