The Galanian Territorial Forces is the Realm Defense Force of Galania.
History
The Galanian Territorial Forces were established in 1988 per the Commonality Constitution's description of responsibility for national defense of Syara falling on both the national government in Zovahr and the individual Realms that form the Commonality. Unlike their counterparts in the Makedonian Home Guard, the Territorial Forces were never envisioned as a major conventional army and instead were adapted as an additional security force. Originally slated for a total strength of 20,000, the Territorial Forces expanded to 30,000 by 1995.
The Territorial Forces played a major role in the Zemplen Resolution Campaign, where they supplied an average of 10,000 personnel to supporting the Government of Syara's Ministry of Security in combatting the SDM. Members of the Galanian Territorial Forces were often the front line for providing security for Syaran government agencies and conducting counter-insurgency operations, including raids, manning checkpoints, and patrolling contested areas. 296 GTF members were killed during the course of the campaign, but their performance was largely seen as succesful, arresting more than 2,000 SMD members after the 1997 Sopron Bombing.
Members of the GTF played a minor role in the events that led to the outbreak of the Zemplen War, after which they were largely overshadowed by the Syaran Commonality Armed Forces. After the loss of Zemplen due to the Treaty of Aragon, the GTF was downsized in relation to Galania's new borders and population. In 2018 the Realm Senate affirmed the role of the GTF as providing "support for civil services and law enforcement throughout the Realm".
Role
As a Realm Defense Force, the Territorial Forces swears loyalty to Galania itself and answers to the Viceroy rather than the Commonality and the Executive. Per the Commonality Constitution the Territorial Forces cannot be mobilized or utilized by the Syaran national government without explicit authorization by the Viceroy and the Realm Senate. The Territorial Forces' typical role involves what is termed as "civil protection services"; this includes supporting law enforcement, providing disaster relief, and emergency response and counter-terrorism.
The Territorial Forces is a distinct legal entity from the Syaran Commonality Armed Forces, and its reserve components, the Syaran National Forces and the Syaran Strategic Forces. Territorial Forces members are not exempt from conscription into the SCAF, however their serivce in the national armed forces can be substituted for servce in the Territorial Forces, though introductory training is the same for both services.
Unlike it's Makedonian counterparts, the Territorial Force's have a more limited tradition of supporting local law enforcement disaster relief rather than operating as a military reserve force.
