The Makedonian Home Guard is the Realm Defense Force of Makedon.

History

The Makedonian Home Guard was established in 1988 as per the Commonality Constitution's description of responsibility for national defense of Syara falling on both the national government in Zovahr and the individual Realms that form the Commonality. Originally envisioned as a force of 100,000 men under the arms, the scale of the Home Guard was gradually downgraded to 20,000 personnel by 1995 organized into four brigades. Like all the Realm Defense Forces, the Home Guard's primary focus is supporting law enforcement in Makedon, and disaster relief as necessary.

The Home Guard was partially responsible for the defense of Imerti when the region was under Syaran control prior to 2010 and provided 1,500 personnel to man the Imerti Garrison. Home Guard forces took part in the Imerti Conflict where they engaged the Imperial Armed Forces of Ruvelka, where they were repulsed and then reinforced by units from the Syaran Commonality Armed Forces. The Home Guard did not play a major role in the outbreak of the Zemplen War, as the SCAF quickly took over responsibility for security efforts along the Makedonian-Ruvelkan border.

In 2018 the strength of the Home Guard was set at 32,000 troops, making it the largest of the Realm Defense Forces.

Role

As a Realm Defense Force, the Home Guard swears loyalty to Makedon itself and answers to the Viceroy rather than the Commonality and the Executive. Per the Commonality Constitution the Home Guard cannot be mobilized or utilized by the Syaran national government without explicit authorization by the Viceroy and the Realm Senate. The Home Guard's typical role involves what is termed as "civil protection services"; this includes supporting law enforcement, providing disaster relief, and emergency response and counter-terrorism.

The Home Guard is a distinct legal entity from the Syaran Commonality Armed Forces, and its reserve components, the Syaran National Forces and the Syaran Strategic Forces. Home Guard members are not exempt from conscription into the SCAF, however their serivce in the national armed forces can be substituted for servce in the Home Guard, though introductory training is the same for both services.

Organization

Home Guard Headquarters is the operational command of the Home Guard, which answers directly to the Viceroy of Makedon. The senior Home Guard member is the Commander of the Guard, who is appointed by the Viceroy and approved by the Realm Senate. Home Guard Command is divided into four Departments; Operations, Personnel, Administration, and Civil Support.
