In Hindia Belandan folklore, the Hantu Pemandu is a ghost who guides lost people in the wilderness back to safety. She is said to also protect travellers from dangerous beings, particularly the Rang Dara. It is said that when a person gets lost in remote areas, she would come to their aid and announce her apparition with a sound likened to a flute. She could easily be distinguished from other ghosts by a set of golden sclera, droopy eyelids and extremely long black and white hair. In some variations of the legend, the Hantu Pemandu would also provide sustenance for the lost travellers.
