The BNK was founded in 1974 by President Jean Preval to contest legislative elections to the Senate. The party's ideological tradition originates from Jean Preval's personal interpretation of progressivism. It continues to have a stable base of support across left-leaning voters and workers across different ethnicites. It is the main proponent of Carucerean progressivism today; although it does not have a coherent ideology beyond a left of center position. Although the party, influence has declined since the 1980s, it still remains an major force for the Carucerean labor movement.
