M5M is a Mutulese automobile manufacturer headquarted in K'alak Muul. It was founded in the wake of the Belfro-Mutulese war of 1911 which had shined a light on many of the Mutulese industry' flaws such as its high level of fragmentation which made it ill suited to sustain a war economy. Sak Chi Chan, the widow of B'alam Kachan of the noble House of Nito, used her share of the inheritance to buy and gather a number of small scale machine and automobile manufacturers in K'alak Muul and its surrounding to form a single consortium named after the date of its official founding: 5 Muwan 9 Manich. It's only decades later that the company name would be simplified into its current form.
History
The new manufacture initially focused on truck production with its first truck completed in 1920. While the company tried to compete in the passenger car market, producing its own model after the success of its truck line, it was ultimately decided to shift the production to cheaper motorbikes. While motorbike production and development was put on hold during the Belfro-Mutulese War of 1928 in favour of expanding truck production to meet the Divine Throne' demand, its bike models would prove popular among returning veterans. During the war, the company also began producing tractors massively, once again to meet state demands. Its not until the 40s that the now re-branded Muwan 5 Manich was able to produce its first successful car model.
By the 50s, Muwan 5 Manich had expanded nicely with multiple factories in K'alak Muul outskirts producing mainly trucks, tractors, and motorbikes to meet the high civilian demand for all three. Sak Chi Chan' daughter, Ikchi, married commoner businessman and manager Ho K'ib who was ultimately adopted into the Nito House. Ho K'ib became the new CEO of Muwan 5 Manich and brought new ideas from his time working in Tsurushima. He thus became closely associated with the Occidentalist movement and his choice as CEO was a clear political positioning by the House of Nito against the Orientalist faction. Muwan 5 Manich thus survived the 50s economic and political crisis.
While Ho K'ib mandate as head executive was a period of steady growth for the company despite the economic slump the rest of the Mutul was going through, notably developing new programs to attract engineers to the company. In 1956 B'amak'ak', brother of the K'uhul Ajaw and Viceroy of Mopan, was made Secretary of the Automotive Commission, an institution tasked with early identification of oversupply, bottlenecks and shortages and to coordinate private and public investments in consequence through consentual means. Ho K'ib was one of B'amak'ak main collaborator, becoming Vice-Secretary of the Commission.
Ho K'ib retired in 1978. The House of Nito chose Ejich, one of their own, as his successor. Ejich was an outspoken Rezeist and managed, through his contacts within the Divine Throne or internationally, to sign a major cooperative agreement with some of Sante Reze' largest automotive manufacturers allowing Muwan 5 Manich to produce competitive cars with foreign technology. Muwan 5 Manich would develop more and more relations with Sante Reze, encourage investments, and develop its own R&D department until its entire component supply chain was modernized, from the spare parts production to the final car assembly. New models were developped for the Mutul' growing market, but Ejich also turned the company outward, multiplying joint-ventures with other manufacturers to export knock-down kits or even fully assembled vehicles.
In the 90s, Ejich and other upper managers of Muwan 5 Manich were threatened by the "Inquisition" led by J'el Tun Tz'unun, Judge-President of K'alak Muul Board of Grievances and Childhood Friend of Jasaw Chan K'awiil V the new K'uhul Ajaw. They were ultimately cleared of charge and Ejich would remain an important collaborator of the Divine Throne and a court regular even after his retirement from the position of CEO in 1999. Afterward, he served as Vice-President of the Autmotive Commission for a couple of years until he left the industry entirely due to health conditions.
Heavy investments from B'amak'ak' children, the Tak’aj Lineage of the Ilok'tab Dynasty, meant that Ejich successor was no longer chosen by the Nito family alone. The position was given to Jolchi, a commoner and engineer closely associated with the Tak'aj. As a CEO, Jolchi continued to expand the international reach of the manufacture with exports to the rest of Oxidentale, to Scipia, Malaio and other continents.
Technology
Battery electric vehicles
Muwan 5 Manich rapidly began producing Battery electric vehicles, helped by the Mutul major battery manufacturing industry and technological partnerships with Sante Reze Noble Houses. The company created its first generation electric vehicles during the 80s. In 2020, M5M released its 8th generation of EVs ranging from buses to cars.
Autonomous vehicles
M5M is considered to be behind the curve in regard to self-driving technology especially when compared to its Rezeses competitors. Although the company unveiled its first self-driving test vehicle in 2012, just in time for the 12 B'aktun ending festivities, the technology has yet to be introduced in any production vehicles.
Motorsports
M5M has been involved in many global motorsports series, providing vehicles, engines and other auto parts. The company maintain its own motorsport team, Muman Racing, which is also the name of its performance brand. Muman Racing compete in many of the world's major motorsports contests.
