The National Congress is the federal, unicameral legislature of the Republic of Vardana. It was founded in 1924 during the Vardanan Revolution. The National Congress was the leading force for republican revolutionaries in overthrowing the Monarchy, and served as the first republican government of Vardana when led by the President of the National Congress.
According to the 1985 Constitution, the National Congress exercises legislative power, approves amendments to the Constitution, supervisory power over the Directory, budgetary powers, and declaration of war powers. The National Congress meets at the Palace of the People, in Metsamor. Members are elected to a two year term, beginning the third Tuesday of July. Each member represents a constituency, which are drawn from within a single province for an average population of 129,440 per seat. The President is the presiding officer of the National Congress, and is typically elected from the majority party.
