Patrick's Town is the capital city of the self-governing Patrick Islands. The town is located on the east side of Middle Patrick, and is the largest settlement on the island. Patrick's Town, like the islands, are named after the Caldish saint, Patrick.

The city serves as the seat of government for Naua Roa, including it's parliament buildings. Despite being a capital city, due to the lack of international recognition for the Patrick Islands, the city only hosts one international representative office; the Satavian High Commission.

As of 2020, Patrick's Town has no international airport, being served instead by the airfield at Daga Roa Naval Base. A new international airport, Naua Roa International Airport was opened in late 2021.

History

Before the settlement of Patrick's Town in 1861, no town existed there; the capital of the Protectorate of the Patrick Islands was Daga Roa, which is now dominated by a Naval Base; but also famous for the Daga Roa Moai and Ahus.

The settlement was founded by Estmerish explorer and naval officer Daniel Kirk to be an administrative base for the islands, and to have a port able to unload ships; the new settlement was named after the island. Growth was rapid, as immigration to the islands increased and native villages were incorporated into the growing settlement.

In 1921, the islands became the capital (and largest settlement; having taken over Daga Roa in 1919) of the Colony of Naua Roa following Estmere's transfer of the islands to Satavia for administrative purposes.

In 1937, the islands were annexed by Satavia and incorporated as one of the seven provinces of the Republic; Patrick's Town was the capital of the Patrick Islands Province. It would remain so until 1976; when the National government who had run Satavia as a quasi-dictatorship since 1939, collapsed. Following the 1976 Constitution, the islands' provincial status was removed.

In March 1979, the capital became a subject of global attention following the capture of the islands by a brigade of "Die Volksmilitie", a far-right Satavian paramilitary. In a daring assault, codenamed Operation Thunderbolt, Hallandic-trained Satavian paratroopers and marines seized back the island and the capital; during the fighting, seventy De Volksmilite were killed, along with thirteen Satavian military personnel; in addition to four civilians.

In 1988, an independence referendum was held which saw nearly 85% of the residents of Patrick's Town vote for independence and free association with Satavia. The next year, the Patrick Islands officially became independent from Satavia as Naua Roa - but independence was not recognised by the Community of Nations. Patrick's Town remained the capital city of the new state.

The Government of Naua Roa announced in 2011 that it planned to construct a new international airport for the islands outside of Patrick's Town, as flights had been using Daga Roa Naval Base's airstrip which was inconvenient. The Airport was initially going to be built just outside of Patrick's Town; however, following delays and a planning dispute it was moved to Port Kirk.

Government

Patrick's Town is in the Middle Patrick District; the district itself further split up into boroughs, with the Patrick's Town borough encompassing Patrick's Town and the village of Kaiora. The capital is run by it's mayor, who since 2018 has been Kara Maoui, who was elected in the 2018 Patrick's Town Mayoral Election. The Town elects two of the 12 members of the High Council, and one of the three members of the Council of Elders (elected for the entire island of Middle Patrick).

The Patrick's Town Town Council is made up of sixteen representatives who choose how to spend government money, and collect council taxes, as well as manage local services. For this purpose, Patrick's Town is divided into four seperate "District Designations": Port, North Town, South Town and Kaiora.

Transport

The town is serviced by multiple port links, and also by a bus service and privately owned taxis. Daga Roa Naval Base's airstrip provides connections to Satavia; with a twice-weekly roatation between Port Hope and Patrick's Town, in addition to a once-weekly rotation between Victoriaburg and Patrick's Town.

A new airport, Naua Roa International Airport, will open in mid-2021.

Economy

The local economy is almost entirely funded by tourism and profits that come from tourism; the Moai and Ahus are the main atraction, being registered as a CONDECS World Heritage Site since 1997.

Patrick's town is growing; however, due to the high crime rate and lack of international recognition, major businesses do not chose to move to the islands, despite being clasified as a tax haven.
