The Senate of Amathia (Amathian: Ⱄⰵⱀⰰⱅⱆⰾ Ⰰⰿⰰⱚⰹⰵⰹ, tr. Senatul Amathiei) is the national legislature of Amathia. It follows a bicameral structure, being composed by the Chamber of the Nation and the Chamber of the People.
Refounded following the establishment of the Amathian Democratic Republic, the Senate considers itself to be to the direct successor of the same institution that existed during the Kingdom of Amathia, rejecting the legitimacy of its immediate predecessor, the Grand National Council. Through the Royal Senate, the Senate of Amathia is the last in a long list of senatorial institutions which were in the past centered in Arciluco, from the Solarian Senate to the Senate of the Three Nations and the inheritor of a lasting democratic and senatorial tradition. In its present form, the Senate is a modernization of the parliamentary assembly that existed during the constitutional monarchy, adapted to function in a federal framework and in a modern democracy, taking some inspiration from the Gaullican institution with the same name. Ever since its reestablishment, the Senate of Amathia has played a crucial role in Amathia's transition to democracy, passing the laws that were fundamental in the reformation of the entire state and of its institutions. It has also been one of the greatest promoters of Amathia's modern diplomatic orientation, directing Amathia towards its integration in the Euclean Community.
The two chambers of the Senate have different attributions, as outlined in the Constitution of Amathia. Depending on their respective attributions, one of the chambers acts as a consultative chamber, while the second has the final say as the deciding chamber. If the first chamber adopts a law, the law proposal moves to the second chamber which makes the final decision on whether to accept or reject it. If however, the deciding chamber merely amends the proposal, it is returned to the consultative chamber, and in this case, the first chamber has the power to approve or deny the proposal permanently.
The members of the Chamber of the People, known as deputies, are elected throughout the entire country, while the members of the Chamber of the Nation, known as representatives, are elected regionally, with each Constituent Republic and the Central Capital electing a certain number of representatives. The Senate meets in the Palace of the People in Arciluco.
