The first predecessors of the party include the General Workers' Council (Allgemeinee Arbeiterrat) and the Social Democratic Workers' Party (Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei) in 1859, that merged into the Social Proletarian Party (Sozialistische Proletariatspartei) in 1870, renamed into simply the Proletariatspatei in 1879.
