The Triumphant-class was a class of nuclear-powered attack submarines of the Commonwealth Navy. It was designed in the mid-70s to supplant and eventually replace the first generation SSNs of the fleet, with the namesake vessel of the class launched in 1978. Conceived as a rival to designs such as the Songoryu and 688 classes, it pioneered a number of new key technologies in submarine construction, including anechoic tiles, shrouded pump jets, as well as an innovative Integrated Digital Combat System which processes data from the new active and passive sonar suites and generate firing solutions.
The Triumphant Class was to be replaced in the 1990s by two new models - the Triton Class and the Xiphos Class. The latter was to be a dedicated hunter-killer submarine to counter enemy high performance SSNs, whereas the former were to be cheaper to build and deploy in bulk for operations against hostile shipping and land targets. Many of the new technology and equipment found in later CN submarines have been retrofitted to remaining Triumphant Class vessels, including the all-important Type 2078 sonar suite. Budgetary issues has kept the Triumphant in service to this day, albeit in heavily upgraded form.
