The Triumphant-class was a class of nuclear-powered attack submarines of the Commonwealth Navy. It was designed in the mid-70s to supplant and eventually replace the first generation SSNs of the fleet, with the namesake vessel of the class launched in 1978. It pioneered a number of new key technologies in submarine construction, including anechoic tiles, shrouded pump jets, as well as an innovative Integrated Digital Combat System which processes data from the new active and passive sonar suites and generate firing solutions.
The vessels of the Triumphant Class serves alongside six newer Triton-class submarines, which entered service between 2000-2010. Many of the new technology and equipment found in later CN submarines have been retrofitted to remaining Triumphant Class vessels, including the all-important Type 2078 sonar suite. They will be replaced beginning in 2027 by a new class of submarines.
